JOURNEY: Second to the right and straight on ‘til nightfall…your ship awaits. This scent opens with a cannonball of herbs and dark spice. Angelica roots and cardamom pods erupt from the cannon, surprising the ship, causing the oak barrel of gin to spill over onto the cedar planks. The briny sea below dances in a streak of moonlight, its waters beyond shrouded in the black mystery of the night. It may be dark, but the gin never stops flowing in this lost land. 🏴‍☠️

INSPIRATION: “The long-pondered flanker to the popular Black Sails. I had the idea to ‘dirty’ up the original Black Sails for quite some time. I envisioned the same ship from Black Sails, long after the sun’s gone down. The pirates have been knocking back their gin and decided to fire off a cannon. “Farrgh the scent of it”, they said. So, I cranked up the spice and added an herbal kick of Angelica. The woods I wanted to put a little more emphasis on while also darkening the base notes and dirtying them up. The soul of Black Sails is there, just different. The opening of this scent has become my current obsession.”

Each cruelty-free fragrance from For the Scent of It is crafted by hand with care using only responsibly sourced materials. Every fragrance is created from scratch one material at a time and each is diluted to high “Eau de Parfum” strength. There are no phthalates, parabens, dyes, and ABSOLUTELY NO pre-made, inexpensive “fragrance oils”. Each bottle is filled by hand in small batches making each bottle feel uniquely special during the process. Each bottle is shipped in eco-friendly packaging that can be reused or recycled. So often a perfume is purchased and the box just sits there or gets thrown out. We believe a perfume shouldn’t be regarded necessarily for extravagant packaging and should be enjoyed simply “For the Scent of It”!

A flanker done right

Michael has achieved what so many brands seem to struggle with lately: making a flanker that that is recognizable while giving it a new personality and function. And boy does Blacker Sails ever have a different personality from its predecessor. While the initial blast brings Black Sails to mind, Blacker Sails immediately becomes spicier, herbal, and edgier. As it develops, the gin and musk from Black Sails is detectable, but it is darker, mysterious, and classy.

If Black Sails is a well-groomed scent perfect for spring and summer days under white clouds and blue skies, Blacker Sails shines after the sun goes down.

A dark and daring hit

Wow, this one was not what I expected but I am already obsessed. I was so curious how Michael was going to dirty up the original Black Sails. As a scent that was very watery, clean and bright on me, it wasn't exactly easy to picture it being dirty. However, Michael certainly managed to do so. The core of the original is there, but it's buried pretty deep and you only get a taste of it here and there, far into the dry down. The incense and woody notes are ramped up, making it dark and almost brooding (which I love). The star, though, is the angelica. It slaps you across the face immediately, enrobing you in its smoky and slightly bitter herbal tones. The gin creeps in in the heart, rounding it out and offering a bit of sparkle, like stars twinkling over the midnight sea. This is a nighttime scent if there every was one. It's like midnight in a bottle. While it's a bit dark to wear to the club, this one would be perfect for a date night. It has this refined edge to it that could easily be dressed up as well. So happy to have gotten my hands on this one and can't wait to spend more time with it.
